It’s been way too long since I’ve posted a blog because operating BA Moving Arts has been a time-consuming learning process, and now we are only two weeks away from Shake the Bay! But you knew that and already have your tickets… right?
Shake the Bay is a full-length belly dance show that I produce to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. It’s a big production that happens annually and includes a performance workshop, so I started planning it over a year ago, way before founding BA Moving Arts. The event will definitely have to evolve as I search for the best way to balance my passion for helping the Alzheimer’s Association with my new business responsibilities. I’ve always wanted the event to be associated with a group of dancers who donate performances at assisted living facilities, so perhaps that will be part of this evolution. I’m excited to see what happens!
I also have another very exciting event coming up… my wedding! Super Steve and I will be tying the knot in June and will be honeymooning in Europe for two solid weeks. I’ve been working so hard since the studio opened on November 1st, and it will be so nice to get away and relax; hopefully, gain a new perspective on several things.
While I’ve apparently been avoiding my blog… I’ve been teaching, performing, and planning more fun offerings for YOU! I’m so proud to already have THREE student performance workshops come to fruition this year. In my Tuesday night Intermediate sessions, Pat and Shondell did a bang-up job learning my “Talking Drums” drum solo choreography, and Lija, Melissa, Niusha, and Surreyya did an incredible job learning my Marilyn Monroe feather boa choreography! In my Sunday afternoon Advanced session, Judith, Tatyana, April, and Emily got an excellent start on their Warrior Woman training with my “Got It” group sword choreography and we took it to Rakkasah!
Since I’m super busy with other things and will be honeymooning, Rose Harden is filling in on Tuesday nights, and I’ll be missing the BA Moving Arts June Open House. I’m excited to come back and see the performance videos… and get back to teaching! I’ve got my Intermediate Tuesday night sessions planned for the rest of the year: July/Aug will be a Hip Hop fusion piece to “Bird Machine,” Sept/Oct will be a Halloween piece called “The Hump” and we will be adorable monsters with bright fur and googly eyes on our costumes, and Nov/Dec will be “Yuletide Zeppelin,” which is a mashup of Christmas songs set to the tune of Led Zeppelin songs. I’m also planning more Sunday afternoon workshops for sword, veil, zills, and dance conditioning throughout the year. I give each performance series a minimum of two performance opportunities at the conclusion of the series and plan to produce a 2018 spring showcase for BA Moving Arts so our students can have a chance to be on a real stage.
This weekend I’ll be teaching belly dance and yoga at BA Moving Arts most of the day Saturday. On Sunday, at How Weird Street Faire in San Francisco, I have the pleasure of performing my Marilyn Monroe number as a duet with Melissa, and the “Got It” sword piece with April, Emily, and Judith. You have so many reasons to come see me. Doooooo eeeeeeeeeeeet!
